Why Start A Self Hosted Wordpress Blog?

You can blog for free. You can go to blogger or wordpress.com and set up a blog within 2 minutes from now but here are a few reasons I suggest you take the time to set up your own.

  1. It is your domain and your hosting - if you are looking to sell your business in a few years time you can't sell a blog that is on the blogger platform!
  2. Self hosted Wordpress has far more flexibility and functionality. You can add whatever you like to it and turn it into a portal of information for people visiting.
  3. You can turn it into a membership site. Thanks to some of the extras available you can do things like turn your wordpress blog into a membership site and earn extra money that way.
  4. It is your domain name that is valuable. If you have 10,000 people visiting a domain name you have a strong case to sell advertising at a high price. At your price!
  5. Your blog can be shut down at anytime! If you are on one of the free platforms and you add something that violates their terms and conditions they will shut you down without explanation. You will go to your blog one day and it will be gone! Imagine losing all your content! Make sure you back up regularly :-)

So those are the five top reasons I recommend you start your own self hosted Wordpress blog rather than rely on the free services.

It is easy to do and very low cost. All you need is a domain name and some hosting.

Watch the videos below to help you get started.

Watching Longer Videos

Youtube only allow videos under 10 minutes and a couple of my vidoes are a few minutes over that so I have added them as a link for you instead. You will find them all on my blog anyway

Congratulations! You Now Have Your Own Self Hosted Wordpress Blog

There are a few things you will want to do now that your blog is up. A little bit of house keeping to ensure your blog functions well.

That includes :

  • Changing your permalinks (I explain what that is)
  • Adding plugins (I explain what they are)
  • Changing your Wordpress theme
  • Adding your Wordpress API Key (to stop spammers commenting on your blog)

Once you complete those things your blog is up and ready to go

Great! You anticipated every question anyone could possibly have. As I think more and more about using a different blogging platform - this could be just what I need.

I'll spend the time and go through it all.

Many thanks!

I have been considering a blog, but haven't decided what my options are going to be. This hub is quite detailed. It sounds like a good way to go. Thank you for the information.

I am happy you found it useful and it helps - that is always my aim being online. To provide content that helps!
